"A Man Called Upon To Be A Hawk Must Catch Chickens’

As Nigerians look forward to tomorrow’s inauguration of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Vanguard newspaper takes a critical look at the second coming of the retired general, noted for his tough stance on corruption.

Muhammadu Buhari, who will be sworn in on Friday as Nigeria’s new president, is a one-time coup leader who once ruled Africa’s most populous nation with an iron fist.
But he has undergone a remarkable transformation from military general to as he calls it a “converted democrat” whom many see as the solution to Nigeria’s many problems.
His election victory over President Goodluck Jonathan two months ago was the first time power had changed hands to an opposition party at the ballot box in Nigeria’s turbulent political history.
Yet commentators say he will still need to delve into his army past to tackle rampant corruption, Boko Haram security concerns and economic troubles over the next four years.
“For him to succeed in tackling these knotty problems, he will need to behave like a dictator in spite of the constitution, ignore criticisms and keep abay sycophants,” said one former army officer who took part in Nigeria’s first military coup in 1966.
“This is the time for him to bear his fangs against graft,” added social commentator Tokede Williams. “A man called upon to be a hawk must catch chickens.”
Buhari, 72, has already pledged the corrupt and corruption will have no part in his administration and that he intends to lead by example.
Unusually for a Nigerian leader, he did not accumulate much in the way of spoils during his 20 months in charge of a military regime from December 1983.
The devout Muslim, who has had to fend off claims from opponents that he is a religious zealot, is known to have only one simple bungalow in Daura, his home town in the northern state of Katsina.
He also took out a bank loan to pay the 27.5-million-naira ($136,000, 123,000 euro) fee just to contest for the presidential ticket for his party primary election.
In office, his conduct will be closely watched for signs of excesses from his previous time in power that notably saw a crackdown on “indiscipline” and corruption.
Critics of the regime and political opponents were thrown in jail, including the Afro-beat music legend Fela Kuti, who was known for his outspoken lyrics.
Umaru Dikko, a former minister to the elected president Shehu Shagari that he overthrew, was found drugged in a crate on a plane at Stansted Airport, in an attempt to smuggle him back to Nigeria.
Critics of Buhari, particularly outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), even suggested: “Once a tyrant, always a tyrant.”
“At his age, it is always difficult for somebody to change his normal way of life overnight. A leopard doesn’t change his spots suddenly,” said one lawyer close to the incoming administration.
“However it all depends on those guiding him in office. Buhari is used to the military command structure and the tendency to be autocratic will always be there.”
Softly spoken Buhari himself has rejected the description of “dictator” and vowed to operate “under democratic rules”, without conducting a witch-hunt against the previous administration.
“Let’s put the past behind us, especially the recent past. We must forget our old battles and past grievances and forge ahead,” he said in his acceptance speech on April 2.
This month, he announced he would no longer be referred to as “General Buhari”.

Buhari’s previous time in power ended in a bloodless barracks coup led by Ibrahim Babangida in August 1985.
He slipped out of public life but returned as head of a government agency, the Petroleum Trust Fund, bankrolling development projects with additional revenue from oil sales.
At the agency, he again showed an autocratic but effective style.
“He is not very communicative, he is reticent but quite knowledgeable without flaunting it,” said Ayo Banjoko, a Lagos-based political analyst.
“He is imbued with a messianic zeal. He has a rigid and intransigent disposition and he believes this country must and should be purged of its ills, especially corruption.”
Buhari’s military background and previous role as a northeastern governor have seen him viewed as best-placed to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency that has killed 15,000 since 2009.
Last July, he narrowly escaped death after a suicide bombing on his car as it travelled through the northern city of Kaduna. Many blamed the militants after he had previously criticised the group.
Buhari is divorced from his first wife Safinatu, with whom he had five children, and married Aisha, 44, in 1989. They also have five children together.
Meanwhile, in an open letter, a Nigerian student Adebanjo O. Aladetan from the University of Roehampton, London, United Kingdom has advised Buhari on the first steps he should take as Nigeria’s president.

Buhari To Deal With Boko Haram Decisively - Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the ex-Nigerian president, has spoken about why it is taking so long for Nigerian army to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east of the country.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the ex-Nigerian president, has spoken about why it is taking so long for Nigerian army to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east of the country.
Obasanjo said the reason is because the army had high ranking officers who are corrupt, and was also not equipped to deal with the militants.

The former president spoke about Boko Haram in a panel discussion on ‘Development and Security: Dealing with New Threats’ at the ongoing 2015 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
Meanwhile, he expressed confidence that the incoming government of Muhammadu Buhari would deal with the Boko Haram fighters conclusively.

He was quick to add that Boko Haram will not be dealt with using the army alone but the administration also has to resolve the problems of underdevelopment and poverty ravaging most parts of the northern region.
He said: “The military was not adequately equipped to deal with terrorism and there was corruption in the high ranks of the military. I believe Boko Haram will be dealt but it will not be dealt with only by military force because we have to deal with the big problems of underdevelopment and poverty. But if you don’t do that and you keep on hanging those problems, they will be suppressed for a while  and it will be a matter of years, then you will begin to have Boko Haram in one form or the other rearing its ugly head again.”
Also speaking, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the chairperson of the African Union, noted that there was an immediate need to address the issues of underdevelopment, unemployment and poverty across Africa.

She said: “Africa is full of young people. If we don’t invest in them, we’re sitting on a time-bomb.”
President-elect Buhari will be sworn-in to the office of Nigeria’s president tomorrow, May 29, 2015.
Meanwhile, according to the latest reports Buhari arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of May 28, Thursday.
The outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan has attended his last Federal Executive Council meeting and reportedly sacked his cabinet.

Group Files Suit To Stop Buhari's May 29 Inauguration

Just as everything seems to be ready for Muhammadu Buhari’s May 29 inauguration, a Nigerian group has called on Abuja Federal High Court to stop the process.
The Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative on May 26 filed a suit to stop Mahmud Mohammed, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, from swearing in the president-elect, the The Punch reports.
The plaintiff insists that the certificate of return issued to Buhari by the INEC contained false information.  The demand is to have the certificate nullified as Buhari allegedly provided false information about his academic status.
The group’s lawyer Philip Ekpo explains that the APC politician did not even have the right to run for the presidency, based on the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and and the Electoral Act.
The plaintiff seeks:
“A declaration that the 3rd defendant be stopped from swearing in the 1st defendant as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the issue of perjury involving the 1st defendant has not been resolved.

We Are Investigating Oyedepo's School request - Britain

The British Government has revealed that David Oyedepo’s Winners’ Chapel International’s request to start a school in the country is under investigation.
David Oyedepo
David Oyedepo
Kingdom Heritage Model School was meant to be for scholars from the age of four and will be located in Dartford and start in September.
The school was planned to teach students “Biblical truths” in each subject and is currently being considered by the British Department for Education. The Church is also under investigation by the Charity Commission.
One organization called the National Secular Society, is against the creation of the school because the organization stands for the separation of religion and state.
In 2011, Oyedepo was allegedly caught on tape attacking a young girl in one of his service, He said the girl was possessed by some evil spirits. In one letter NSS sent to the Department for Education raised concern about the suitability of Oyedepo’s Church to run educational establishments in the country, raising concerns over both educational standards and child welfare.
In 2012, The Metropolitan Police said that kids believed to be under the possesion of evil spiritsor under the influence of witches are at “clear and immediate risk of significant harm.”
The NSS also asked the DfE to investigate the details concerning the case of a three year old child who passed away when drowned in the toilets of a Kingdom Heritage Model School operated by Winners Chapel in Nigeria in 2012.
NSS Campaign manager Stephen Evans said: “Given this Church’s association with belief in witchcraft and the actions of its leader, we hope the department will give serious consideration to the reliability of the school’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.”

When the church was contacted, they refused to respond to the allegations, but another staff member of the church claimed the allegations was just a scam and therefore are false.

Ramadan: Christian In Iran Sentenced To Having His Lips Burnt

A Christian man in Iran was sentenced to having his lips burnt with a cigarette for eating at daytime during Ramadan.
According to Daily Mail he was punished publicly. The city deputy governor Ali Ashraf Karami also revealed that 5 Muslim men were flogged with 70 lashes for not fasting during the holy month.
Reacting to the sentence, The National Council of Resistance of Iran opposing the government called such a punishment "brutal" adding that the Christian man was also beaten "savagely". Extracts from the body’s statement reads:
"The silence of the world community, especially of western countries, vis-à-vis these medieval punishments under the excuse of having nuclear talks with Iran has intensified the brutal and systematic violation of human rights in Iran."
It has been gathered that the organization working under the name Human Rights Without Frontiers (HRWF) releasing its annual report put Iran in top-5 countries with the largest number of "freedom of religion or belief prisoners". It is also provided that country Christians, about 250,000 Christians out of 76 million population, become target of torture, imprisonment or the death sentence under Sharia law for not observing Islamic religious festivals and dress codes.
Meanwhile, the Holy Month of Ramadan, which is soon coming to an end worldwide, is characterized as the time of spiritual reflection, increased devotion and worship teaching Muslims patience, modesty and spirituality. The fast, which starts and dawn and ends at sunset, presupposes abstaining from eating and drinking during this period of the day.

A wildlife expert took photos of giant python swallowing a baby antelope on the edge of an open field at village in India.
After being tipped off about the spectacle, Nitish Bambhaniya accompanied by a member of his team dashed 25 miles to the tiny village of Billa in the Indian state of Gujarat to photograph the huge snake’s astonishing digestive feat.

On arrival, the expert found the giant snake – an Indian rock python – who was trying to swallow a nilgai, also known as a blue bull. However, the snake stopped swallowing the antelope and let go of its lifeless prey as people from the village gathered nearby.

According to Mr Bambhaniya, pythons can shed body weight and escape faster.
"I got a call in the morning for an Indian rock python. When we reached the spot, we saw this massive python. The python had hunted a baby blue bull and had already eaten 80% of the bull’s body.
"It is on the edge of an open field, so lots of locals start gathering there," Nitish, who runs the Red Headed Vulture Nature Club, said.
A number of locals wanted to kill the snake because the python would be a risk to children, but the wildlife expert convinced the villagers not to kill the python. Later the snake was caught and handed it over to the forest department officials.
The python was released by the officials in a nearby forest, before slithering away to freedom.

I Don’t Think Omisore Will Win – PDP's Ekiti Gov-elect Fayose

With the August 9th Osun governorship election coming soon, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are trying to gather all their top stakeholders in the region to help carry the momentum from Ekiti election to Osun.

Ekiti State Governor-elect Ayo Fayose
PDP had taken Ekiti from APC in the recently held gubernatorial election, where Ayo Fayose came out victorious over the current governor Kayode Fayemi.
However Fayose is not sure his Party’s candidate, Iyiola Omisore, can repeat the dance and get PDP the ticket.
In a recent interview with Progress 100.5FM in Ekiti, Fayose reportedly said: “I can’t see Omisore winning the poll. I don’t think he can win but I wish him good luck.”
With this recent statement, critics have now interpreted it as a cold war between Fayose and the PDP caniddate, Omisore.
PDP’s Iyiola Omisore is running against the Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and needs all the help his party can provide.
Meanwhile, Fayose has been on a victory lap tour between major states in the west but has avoided going to Osun to help and trump up local support for his party’s flag bearer.
